Topomax is intended to "calm" overexcitable nerve cells in the brain before they turn into a migraine. The prescription is taken daily and the goal is for it to head off the migraine prior to onset thus reducing the number of migraine episodes experienced by patients.

However, like most medications, Topomax does have some side effects to be concerned with. These side effects are said to occur more often in the early stages of treatment. Some of the side effects are numbness and tingling in the arms and legs or a feeling of pins and needles, fatigue, a weight loss, a change in food or drink tastes and a loss of concentration, attention and memory such as a difficulty staying on track in a conversation or finding the words to fit what you want to say. Additionally there are reports of nausea, loss of appetite and some diarrhea.

Many of the patients who have experienced these side effects find that they dissipate after the initial adjustment to the medication and dosage of the medication is stabilized. This medication will need to be adjusted to find the right dosage for you and your condition. If you experience any of these side effects you should contact your physician immediately to discuss a potential dosage change in your medication. Your physicians will likely start with a very low does and increase it gradually over time until the right dosage is reached for you. The medication may take a some time, as much as a month or so, for the medication to begin to be affective and adjustments may need to be made from there.

One of the advantages of this medication is the ability to take it every day and not have to worry that you do not get to your medication in time to stop a migraine. It should be noted that this medication can have an adverse affect on other medications you are taking and you should therefore talk with your physician about those affects. It may, in fact, make birth control you may be on less effective.
