Thyroxine goes by different brand names: Synthroid, Levothroid,
Cytomel, among others. This supplement is mainly used to aid people
suffering from hypothyroidism since their thyroid gland isn't
producing enough amounts of hormones. The thyroid gland becomes fully
or partially dysfunctional through strong medications or
radiation. When this happens, your body isn't producing appropriate
levels of thyroid hormone into your bloodstream, making your unable to
perform physical and mental activities.
Before taking Thyroxine medications, make sure to let your
attending physician about it to ensure its safety and effectiveness on
your condition. It is usually taken about an hour before you eat your
breakfast. But your doctor should be able to give you directions on
when to take it. Take it with a glass of water if you are unable to
swallow the pill.
For children taking Thyroxine, you may dissolve it on about two
teaspoons of water. For babies, avoid mixing it with soybean feed as
it can have adverse effects on your baby's health. Stick to the
prescribed schedule of taking Thyroxine in order to get full benefits
from it. Check the label for the right dosage, and crosscheck with
your doctor to make sure you are getting the dosage that's appropriate
for your age and condition. Let your doctor know about the side
effects that you may be experiencing. Don't just stop taking it
without letting your physician know about it. For patients who have
their thyroid completely removed, this is usually a lifetime
medication.
Among the Thyroxine side effects that you may encounter are nausea,
tiredness, loss of appetite, anxiety problems, sweating, and lack of
sleep. For people who are required to take this medicine for life, the
side effects could mean that the dosage must be changed. For instance,
if you are experiencing weird involuntary muscle activities such as
palpitation and muscle cramps, you may need to tone down the dosage a
little bit.
Do not use Thyroxine to mix with your diet pills or for weight loss
purposes. The effects can be fatal and life-threatening. Unless your
doctor says so, stay away from Thyroxine and consider other diet
approach.
