Taurine side effects are certainly something to watch out for when
you regularly consume any of the many energy drinks now on the
market.
Taurine is an amino acid that occurs naturally within the human
body as well as in food -- especially animal based protein.
Although the body spends a lot of energy on taurine in various
ways, scientists are not completely in agreement on exactly what it’s
functions are. There is evidence that it serves as a neurotransmitter
(a nervous system messenger), a regulator of salt levels and water
within the cells in the body and also a stabilizer of membrane walls
of the cells. What’s more, taurine takes part in the detoxing of
strange chemicals or materials in the body.
In general, when Taurine has been used in patients at a level of
around 1-3 grams per day, there have not been any major side effects
reported. In fact, some patients have even received up to 18 grams a
day for 6 months, to treat pains and muscle stretches, with no
apparent problems.
Despite the many clinical trials and studies, the fact is that no
one is quite sure what the maximum daily dose of taurine should
be. Some doctors have even prescribed doses of 500-1000mg per day to
some adults they have treated.
Although taurine has had positive effects in patients all over the
world, as the old saying goes, “too much of anything is bad for you”,
and this may well be the case with taurine. Some people have claimed
to have suffered from anxiety and palpitations -- effects similar to
when a person takes too much caffeine.
Ultimately, the best thing is to consume your favorite energy
drinks or products in moderation because too much of anything simply
can not be good for your body. Even too much cabbage is harmful
eventually! Another piece of advice to avoid harmful side effects
from taurine is to not combine it with very large doses of caffeine at
the same time. Although most energy drinks contain a significant
amount of caffeine already, just make sure you don’t drink any coffee
or other drinks such as Coca-Cola afterwards for a few hours at least
(preferably a day or two).
