Respiratory tract diseases are on the increase due to various reasons. Main culprit is pollution. Asthma is one such disease. It is a common disease with symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing and tightness in chest. The severity of the symptoms can be controlled by avoiding allergy inducing and irritating substances. Inhaling corticosteroids also helps to certain extent. The normal treatment is done with short time acting beta blockers like salbutamol.
There is another disease relating to respiration known with different names like, Chronic Airflow Limitation CAL, Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease COLD and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD. This is more serious condition than asthma. Medically this disease is caused by limited air flow to lungs. Unlike asthma, this is not reversible and gets worse over a period of time. Harmful gases associated with pollutants, diesel and petrol fumes, tobacco smoke and some chemicals cause this disease.
A combination of two drugs is used to treat asthma and COPD. They are budesonide and formoterol. The first one helps in controlling inflammation and the second one dilates the respiratory tract. The drug is sold by a pharmaceutical company called AstraZeneca with trade name, ‘Symbicort'. The drug is self administered by the patient through inhaling. The drug comes with an inhaler. Before using the drug doctors warn patients on the side effects of symbicort. It is important to know about side effects of symbicort for the better management of COPD.
Side effects of symbicort can be divided into four categories. The first category is common side effects. Common side effects include mild throat irritation, hoarseness, coughing, tremors, palpitations and headache. Another category of the side effects of symbicort are called uncommon side effects. These are muscular cramps, dizziness, sleeplessness, nausea, restlessness and agitation. The third category of side effects of symbicort are known as rare side effects. These are itchiness, rash, bruises and respiratory spasms. The last category is really rare. This is known as very rare cases of side effects of symbicort. They are bloating, high blood sugar levels, chest pain and behavioural disorders and depression.
Proper understanding of the disease, doctor's counselling, proper meditation and knowledge of substances that are triggering the symptom causing allergies are vital to control asthma and COPD. A patient should be properly educated to create an awareness of the disease. Usually patients are advised to always carry the drug with them, so that the sudden onset of symptoms can be relieved.
