The side effects of magnesium are rare but they are curable, provided you take proper care of yourself. Magnesium is an indispensable part of our body though it is required in very small amounts of about 65 mg for children between 1-3 years, 110 mg for children between 4-8 years and 350 mg for everyone above the age of 9 years.
Magnesium can be obtained from several sources with sea water being the most important source. Other sources include fruits and green leafy vegetables, tea, nuts and spices. Magnesium multivitamins, laxatives and injections are also rich in the mineral. It is not possible to suffer from magnesium deficiency from any natural source. Therefore, magnesium supplement is the only reason that can lead to side effects. As too much of anything is harmful, it should be kept in mind that magnesium supplements should also be taken in moderation.
The side effects of magnesium are:
1. Nausea, diarrhea, low blood pressure, cramps and muscle weakness, drowsiness, dryness of mouth, nose and throat and thickening of mucus in nose and throat.
2. It can cause intestinal disease.
3. Magnesium that is not needed by our body is strained by the kidney to be eliminated from our body. Therefore, magnesium supplements would be harmful for anyone suffering from renal failure.
4. People who take medicines for heart ailments are usually discouraged from taking magnesium supplements as their bodies are not able to absorb it. This causes irregular heart beats which can, ultimately, prove to be fatal.
5. It can cause skin flushing.
6. It can lead to abnormal perspiration or hyperventilation.
7. Severe symptoms are different allergic reactions, itching, swelling of the mouth, face, lips and tongue, difficulty in breathing, problems while urinating, tightness in chest, confusion, coma, black stool, difficulty in swallowing, dizziness, hoarseness, sore throat, extreme stomach pain, excessive tiredness, ringing in the ears, bleeding and bruising. It can even turn fatal.
8. Some other symptoms are anxiety, irritability, Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), muscle spasm, insomnia, stunted nail growth, seizures, hallucinations and delirium, numbness, anorexia, poor memory and the inability to learn quickly.
However, very few cases magnesium overdose are deported. Intravenous or oral supplements are safe methods of supplementing.
Though magnesium side effects are not very common, it is better to take care of ourselves is prevention is always better than cure. So, see a doctor regularly and stay healthy.
