Cholesterol is a form of fat in our body. The fat is stored in the form of lipids which travels in our bloodstream and are deposited in various parts of our body. There are two types of body fat. The HDL or the good cholesterol and the LDL or bad cholesterol. Much of what we eat contain amounts of cholesterol. Eggs, dairy products, porker cuts, beef, cakes and pastries contain high levels of cholesterol. Organ meats like liver and kidneys are also high in cholesterol. Our body needs cholesterol to produce certain hormones and for energy. However, too much of it can increase our chances of developing heart disease. Here are some of the side effects of high cholesterol levels in the body.
When the amount of cholesterol in the blood is high, a person faces many risks. He is at risk of cardiovascular disease due to blocked arteries. Fatty deposits may clog the veins thereby increasing the risk of atherosclerosis or worse, an ischemic stroke. This build – up of fatty deposits in the walls of the veins and arteries may also lead to a heart condition called angina pectoris. This is characterized by a sharp stabbing pain in the chest when cholesterol levels are high. Having high levels of cholesterol in the body may also lead to thyroid problems and a change of your body's metabolism. When your thyroid gland reacts to high levels of cholesterol, cold sweat and nausea follow. These are some of the side effects of high cholesterol levels in the body.
If you suspect that the high cholesterol level in your body is causing pain such as headaches and dizziness, then consult a doctor. You might be suffering from high blood pressure. Monitor your blood pressure and adjust your food intake accordingly. If you have heart disease, atherosclerosis or hypertension in the family history, it would be wise to have a low cholesterol diet. Pork sausages, deep fried meats, French fries and hotdogs are high in cholesterol. Beef steaks and burgers are also high in cholesterol. Venison and veal are as well cholesterol – rich. Crabs, lobsters and prawns are high cholesterol foods while vegetables are low in cholesterol. There are other side effects of high cholesterol levels. If you feel any of the side effects, eat sensibly. Choose fish over meat and fruits instead of cakes or pastries. Remember to prioritize quality over taste and quantity if you have to keep your cholesterol level at a minimum.
