No matter the ill publicity or the horror stories - or even the women's lib accounts then and now - pregnancy will always remain to be an important, tantamount to sacred, phase in a female's life that indubitably changes forever how things are perceived. Then it had been, and now it still is: a mother caring for an unfurling bud of slowly developing life inside of her remains to be one of the magical moments in the period of biological evolution.
Pregnancy however, does not come without its share of trade-offs, and the inevitable aches and pains. Throughout the whole history of the life cycle of man, mothers have always advised and prepared their daughters, who are also going to be mothers, for the things to expect while they are expecting. Most of them are bearable, not actually that bad, but as for the others... blame it on the hype or the story-telling, but the others leave a less than pleasant aftertaste.
Symptoms occurring during pregnancy brook no ethnicity or race - a woman is a woman wherever she is, whatever color her skin possesses. These symptoms actually are like identifiable overtures to an opera, that much telltale they are that it can never be mistaken. Of course, there are considerable allowances to think of as per the height, weight, body mass, body fat content, body chemistry, and all that, but more or less the signs, symbols, and side effects of being pregnant are all encompassing, a common denominator to all soon-to-be mommies.
One of the most emblematic of these signs is nausea. Most especially for the first trimester, morning sickness occurs like clockwork to expectant mothers. They usually could not hold food in, and these vomiting spells can be triggered by the slightest whiff of smell or an unpleasant visual stimulus.
Pregnant women also endure cramps - more often than not for the stockier-built ones. As their bodies take in the weight of the unborn, the leg and limb muscles feel pained stiffness. And the cramps could lead to more aggravating sensations if there is a marked lack of exercise and the muscles are left to disuse.
Of course, there is the craving. Though more women admitted to this not being the case for all, this is perhaps one of the more hype-inducing side effects, as it more commonly affects the husband too. And this is does not entail just any craving - since it IS a psychological manifestation, the pregnant woman usually demands meals of the weirdest preparations or the craziest, out-of-the-season foodstuffs. And what usually follows the craving and the binging is the inescapable weight gain. But usually the fault lies - other than the lack of self-control - in the misconceptions. Mothers have always been led to believe that they should eat for two...which is not the case.
There of course is the hormonal imbalance. Especially for the first-time moms, the re-structuring of the bodily systems to accommodate new life becomes palpable and drastic. And the combined effects of these symptoms - the weight gain, the imbalance, the craving and cramping and vomiting - may cause the most infamous of all: the dreaded mood swings.
Nevertheless, in spite of, and no matter the supposed intermittent symptoms, nothing can take away the glow and anticipation felt by the prospect of giving birth. For truly, the magic is that strong: the beauty of a baby beheld makes all the pain and fuss just about worth it.
