Evening Primrose Oil Side Effects

Though it's known for its benefits and curative effects some people complain of experiencing different side effects while taking evening primrose oil. While it helps in treating and easing the pain caused by pre-menstrual syndrome, eczemas, allergies or rheumatoid arthritis, the evening primrose oil can cause some mild side effects that rarely turn into something more serious.

As stated above the evening primrose oil side effects are just a few and they include:

- a side effect that is more common is a low blood pressure, and it's usually reported by people with blood disorders or by those taking blood thinners

- minor side effects have been reported, too and apparently these ones happen most often: headaches, gastro-intestinal problems and nausea; in most of the cases these only happen because the patient started with a high dosage of oil; this is why is recommended to start with the lower dosage and see how your body reacts, while increasing it

- some studies have also shown that taken during pregnancy or breast feeding the oil might alter the composition of the breast milk and not only it will lose most of its benefits but the baby won't like it either; also, if taken during pregnancy it can cause uterine contractions

- the most severe side effect that can happen is an increased risk of temporal lobe epilepsy, but this can happen only in patients a specific type of drugs along with the oil, called phenothiazine epileptogenic; so, as long as you don't take this drugs, you're safe from this side effect

- a few tests have shown that if a person suffering from mania takes evening primrose oil its symptoms will only get worse

- in other rare cases, people with a history of different types of allergies might experience an allergic reaction to evening primrose oil by developing skin rashes

- it's also not recommended for people suffering from a seizure disorder to take the oil because it can increase the number of seizures

Putting aside these side effects that only occur to a minority of people, the evening primrose oil can help in treating multiple issues and it's considered to be a safe herbal medicine. If you start using it and you notice any of these side effects or any other changes in your body then you have to stop the treatment immediately and go see a doctor
