We live in times when beauty and appearance are often considered to
be more important than anything else. Women have an especially
difficult time in society. Teenagers also face difficulties. With so
much pressure from television and magazines to have some sort of a
perfect body, many people are suffering from eating disorders.
These disorders may result from some sort of body image
problem. Perhaps a young woman does not feel sexy enough or pretty
enough. She may begin abusing her body by starving it or by binge
eating. Bulimia is a form of binge eating, where someone stuffs
themselves full of food and then forces themselves to vomit to rid
their body of the food. They may also abuse laxatives as a way to get
the food out of their body quickly.
There are some very serious bulimia side effects that people need
to know about. These include both physical and emotional effects. The
side effects can include damage to the esophagus and vocal cords,
ulcers in the stomach, dental problems, loss of hair, digestive
issues, and damage to the internal organs. Other side effects include
skin problems, weakened bones, irregularities of the heart beat, not
getting enough vitamins, irregular periods, and insomnia. Some
emotional effects are having a distorted body image, which means that
someone may see themselves as ugly when they are, in fact, perfectly
normal. Also, mood swings, depression, anxiety, and just feelings of
being out of control and out of touch with the world may also be
emotional side effects of bulimia.
If you believe that you or someone you know may be suffering from
bulimia, it is vital that you get medical attention for yourself or
the person. Left untreated, there are numerous permanent problems that
might have to be dealt with. Death is always a possibility when it
comes to eating disorders. There are several different forms of
treatment available to treat bulimia, but help cannot be offered
unless a problem is first acknowledged. Bulimia and other eating
disorders are not anything to be taken lightly. They are usually
indicators of deeper underlying problems. Do not be embarrassed or
ashamed to get help.
