Beta blockers are a type of medication that are typically used to
prevent heart attacks or provide protection to the heart, often
following a heart attack. The use of beta blockers has greatly
improved the quality of life and extended the lives of many
patients. The majority of patients who need this type of medication
will find that the benefits outweigh the risks. However, there are
some risks and side effects that anyone who is taking, or considering
taking a beta blocker, should consider.
The most common side effects include breathing problems such as
asthma, bronchitis and emphysema, in addition to sexual problems,
confusion or memory loss, and depression. Other possible, but less
common, beta blocker side effects are consistent fatigue, digestive
problems, and dizziness that may occur upon standing. This dizziness
may be the result of decreased heart function, which may also manifest
as cold extremities.
Asthma, bronchitis and emphysema are thought to appear due to the
narrowing of bronchial airways. This narrowing is a common symptom of
using beta blockers. Therefore, if there is a history of this type of
issue, beta blockers may be contraindicated. Sexual dysfunction can
appear as either a lack of arousal, or an adequate arousal with
erectile dysfunction. The confusion or memory loss can begin with
little or no warning, and frequently may be noticed by others before
the patient observes it.
Depression, of course, can occur to anyone at anytime, but patients
who take beta blockers are frequent victims. This depression, if it
appears, should be reported as soon as possible to a licensed medical
professional, as should all other symptoms. The digestive problems
that are commonly associated with this class of medication include
diarrhea, constipation and a loss of appetite. Any significant weight
loss should be watched closely, as a person's weight is closely tied
to his or her dose of medication.
Consistent fatigue can manifest as an inability to awaken as
quickly as normally expected, a desire for additional sleep during the
day, and reduced endurance for activities. This symptom is commonly
linked with dizziness upon standing. Some patients have noticed a
marked improvement of symptoms following the use of supplements, which
can also be a subject to be discussed with your physician.
