Antihistamines are in a lot of medications and can be used to
successfully treat colds and allergies. An antihistamine blocks
histamines that cause itchiness and sneezing that are usually a
symptom of allergies or cold which is why these medications work so
well for these illnesses.
Many antihistamine medications are available for over the counter
use and can be purchased almost anywhere. Sometimes they are
prescribed by a doctor to treat the allergies. For those that are
first starting out it is important to know what the antihistamine side
effects are so that one can successfully be able to determine if they
should consult their health care provider or stop use of the
medication all together.
Side effects of using antihistamines include neurological symptoms
such as: dizziness, faintness, confusion, restlessness, tremors,
headaches, seizures, disturbed dreams and/or nightmares, confusions
and nerve pain. There are also digestive side effects such as
increased appetite, diarrhea, and constipation. Physical side effects
are dry mouth, increased thirst, and nasal dryness. It is important
that if the side effects become to sever that one consults a health
care provider and stop the medication right away so as no other side
effects will be present.
It is hard to know how exactly a person will react to
antihistamines as each antihistamine medication has a different side
effect and every person is different. It is a good idea to not drive
or use any heavy machinery until one knows how antihistamines will
react with ones body. It is best to know that if there is any cause
for concern over taking antihistamines it is best to consult a health
care provider or pharmacist who can better assist you with
understanding if this is the right medication to be taking for
whatever symptoms are present at that time.
Although there may seem like a lot of side effects are present with
the use of antihistamines the majority of the side effects that people
experience have little to no severity to them and will pass with
time. This is why doctors tend to prescribe antihistamines for colds
and allergies over other alternatives.
